This robot came right out of the kitchen utensil arsenal.
Mini Spat began life as a simple kitchen spatula. I cut off the handle and
added an Atmel AT90S8535 micro-controller and a pair of low-profile servos (HiTec
HS-77BB). The wheels are Dave-Brown 2" airplane wheels bolted to the servo
horns. The floor sensors are photo-resistors with mini red LED's supplying the
light source. The eyes are GP2D12 IR range sensors, which are used to find the
opponent and drive towards it. Mini-spat is 9" long, so to stay within the
required starting size of 4" square, it starts on it's back with the spatula
sticking straight up. Once started, Mini-spat reverses quickly to drop the front
end down, then starts looking for the opponent.
