PAReX Meeting Notes

Old Business:

Fund Raising ideas for 501c3 status: 501 c 3 status will enable Intel to donate laptops, money, computers, etc.

Membership Drive Membership drive idea was featured last month, if anyone wants to pay their dues in advance feel free to do so. This will help us get the money we need for 501c3 status.

New BotBash Rules The BotBash rules have been re-written. Bob is waiting to put the new rules out until he has a chance to discuss a few things with the organizers of BattleBots. Bob has been receiving e-mails from students around the country about the autonomous event. Also the "Mine Field" event for students was discussed. The "mines" are to be tennis balls or an easily tipped-over flag. Netmedia is developing a "Robot Kit" for such a purpose.

"They’re robots because we call them robots!" - Bob Pitzer

Club Member Resource Pool Steve Kimball is our Web Master and he suggested a resource pool, a list of members on the web and what their specialies are. Mike Reiner is the point of contact.

BattleBots BattleBots is coming up in November in Las Vegas at the same time as ComDex, Tickets are only $12.50 for one session and there are only two sessions. 7 Super HeavyWeights are scheduled to appear. PPV is moved to Jan to coinside with TV Guide coverage. BB has sent tee-shirts for our open house event.

Intel Open House Intel has donated two Lego Mindstorms kits to the club for use in the open house and after. The Plans for the open house plans are the same as we did for Hamilton High. With the maze and programming the robots to run the maze with dead reckoning. This time we will have more prizes and hopefully more robots. We need volunteers to help out with showing the kids how to program the robots. The open house will have many different demos of Intel and Microsoft products. We are hoping to have a human vs robot challenge where a human operator will have to navigate the maze with only the sensory perception of the robot, then the robot will run the maze autonomously, the lowest time wins.

Intel didn’t like the Idea of donation bins, so Bob will submit an expense report to Intel after the Event. Intel is OK with this and 501 c 3 will be paid for after this event! Fab 12 is in chandler two blocks from Bob’s house, early this coming week Bob will mail out the agenda for the Fab 12 event with a map of how to find Fab 12. The agenda for the open house will be sent out to the mailing list.

High School Outreaches High School report from Andy Michalechek

North High in central Phoenix is looking for a mentor to help them start their High school robotics club. North high currently competes in the electric car competitions, with a great deal of success. They have a $5K industrial robotic arm and and a full machine shop. They want to start up a robotics club, anyone interested in helping out? The high schools, Xavier/Brophy and North High Schools are already interested in doing competitions, but we need more people to help these schools get started. Get a hold of Andy Michalecek or Mike Reiner if you’re interested in helping out High school kids with Robotics.

New business:

Elections Club officer elections will be held next month! Offices will be President, Vice President, Secretary and treasurer.

Demo Robot(s) Demo Robot should be fairly large to be seen from a distance but non destructive to the floor, industrial mechanics while large are available "off the shelf", and could potentially lower the cost of a large scale robot. The mechanism in Mark Setrakian's newest creation is an idea for the walking mechanisms. The possibility of different robot projects. Ron Brown mentioned the possibility of a light weight large walking robot or quot;ROD" a two inch diameter, five foot tall rod with a ball in the bottom, like a ball point pen. Walking robots seem the way to go, they just attract the most attention. We need to come up with a design for the club robot, and see if it is feasible for the club robot for demos.

Talent Pool info Bob Gross has (been) volunteered to collect info for our "talent pool"; submit resumes to Bob Gross as to your specialties and abilities if you want to be listed there.
